Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
Our Impact on Sustainability
At Agrain, sustainability is what we are. By repurposing discarded resources, we’re unlocking a plentiful and accessible sustainability solution with big impact for people and planet. With our independently reviewed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), we are certifying our existing sustainability impacts and presenting our mission of becoming the world’s most sustainable ingredient.
WHY AN LCA?
Transparency is important to us both for the benefit of our customers and for ourselves, so that we know exactly how we need to improve. That’s why we’ve conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Agrain flour in collaboration with a third-party environmental evaluation expert.
We adopted the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method, the European Commission’s recommended framework for assessing the environmental impact of products throughout their life cycle. The PEF method measures the environmental footprint across 16 impact categories, including climate change, land use, water use and resource use. This has provided us with a comprehensive understanding of the benefits and trade-offs of Agrain flour compared to other flours and foods.
The results have been validated by Bureau Veritas, an independent auditor, in compliance with ISO standards.

Close-to-Zero Land Use
Agrain flour requires almost no land use, unlike conventional flours made from virgin grains. For every 1kg of regular flour replaced with Agrain flour, 2m2 of farmland can be saved!
Water Efficiency
Upcycling spent grain minimizes water usage, using 96% less freshwater than conventional flour.
Lower Climate Impact
Upcycling spent grains not only reduces the emissions caused by food loss and waste, but also produces 12% less CO2 equivalent emissions compared with conventional flours.
